چکیده

Gamma-ray, density, sonic, resistivity and neutron are the commonly used wireline logs to identify and quantify source rocks. Several models were developed to use the conventional wireline logs for evaluating the thermal maturity of the source rocks and calculating the total organic carbon (TOC) content. Application of Schmockr and Hester [1] approach with some required modifications for the Rudeis Formation, Northern Gulf of Suez, Egypt, is the main purpose of this paper. The results, which compared with those obtained from the Rock-Eval pyrolysis, show that cautions must be taken into consideration when applying this model, because most of the models reflect empirical relatinoships and their validation takes place under certain conditions. It can be concluded that, the Rudeis Formation represents fair source rock potential with type III kerogen and terrestrial supply of the organic matter and is marginally mature for the generation of minor amounts of oil and gas.

Application of Thermal Modelling for Geochemical Characterization of Gadvan Formation, Persian Gulf, Iran

In the this research, the hydrocarbon generation potential of the Gadvan Formation as a probable source rock was investigated in the central part of the Persian Gulf at the borders of Iran. Type and maturity level of kerogen were investigated in six wells using the results of Rock-Eval pyrolysis and compared with results yielded by the modelling software program known as Pars Basin Modeler (PBM...

Source Rock Evaluation of the Cenomanian Middle Sarvak (Ahmadi) Formation in the Iranian Sector of the Persian Gulf

The middle Sarvak formation (Cenomanian) is one of the stratigraphic units of the Bangestan group in the south of Iran. This formation is stratigraphically equivalent to the Ahmadi member of Kuwait and Iraq. There is geochemical evidence that indicates this unit has a high level of organic richness and can be a possible source rock in various locations. This study focuses on the organic geochem...

Geochemical Characterization of Kazhdumi Source Rock in the Khaviz Oil Field, Southwest of Iran, Using Rock-Eval Pyrolysis

The Khaviz oil field located in Dezful embayment is one of Iran’s southwest oil fields. In this study, a total of 28 cutting samples from Kazhdumi formation (well No. KZ1, Khaviz oil field) were subject to geochemical investigation using Rock-Eval pyrolysis for the first time. The results of pyrolysis indicated that Kazhdumi source rock has significant hydrocarbon production potentiality and al...

Geochemical Characteristics and Hydrocarbon Generation Modelling of Early Triassic to Late Cretaceous Formations within Ogaden Basin, Ethiopia

The major goal of this study is the evaluation of the source rock of Ogaden Basin using Rock-Eval Pyrolysis, Vitrinite reflectance (%Ro), and well log data of the Permo-Triassic and the Mesozoic sequences including Karro, Hamanlei, and Urandab Formations. Burial history and level of thermal maturity of the Bodle-1 well, the Calub-1 well and the Hilala-2 well were modeled based on the calibratio...

Chemometrics-enhanced Classification of Source Rock Samples Using their Bulk Geochemical Data: Southern Persian Gulf Basin

Chemometric methods can enhance geochemical interpretations, especially when working with large datasets. With this aim, exploratory hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) and principal component analysis (PCA) methods are used herein to study the bulk pyrolysis parameters of 534 samples from the Persian Gulf basin. These methods are powerful techniques for identifying the patterns of variations i...
